Description of Position / skills Required

The John Howard Society of Red Deer is seeking candidates for the vacant Client Intake and Liaison Caseworker position.  This responsible position works with directly with individuals who have been, are currently, or are at risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. 

The Client Intake and Liaison Caseworker provides our clientele with system navigation, appropriate referral, and support in establishing positive community connections.  To facilitate this process, the Client Intake and Liaison caseworker also is responsible to maintain strong professional relationships with agencies and programs which offer relevant supports, and to advocate when necessary for clients when there is need to access these supports.

Candidates for this position must be comfortable working with clients displaying a wide range of potentially challenging behaviours, and are able to work effectively in office and institutional settings, including correctional institutions.

 

Professional qualifications for the Client Intake and Liaison position is:

Post secondary diploma in social sciences or related human services diploma. 

  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the Executive Director

First Aid with CPR

Background or related experience in the criminal justice field is considered favorable

Successful candidates will also be expected to provide a clear advanced criminal record check

 

Recommended qualifications include specific training in one or more of the following areas:

Counselling techniques, crisis intervention, employment and employability, adult education, mental health and addictions

Group Facilitation

 

Specific Job Duties:

Community and Institutional Supports:

  • Complete intake with new clients to determine areas of need
  • Make appropriate referrals to community supports and agencies as required
  • Provide support with applications and other municipal, provincial or federal government forms
  • Support individuals replacing primary and supporting identification

Manage the John Howard Society Career Closet:

  • Maintain inventory and storage of donated items
  • Develop relationships with potential donation resources

Networking and Interagency:

  • Attend regular interagency meetings to promote and inform agency programs and supports
  • Be actively involved in relevant committees that support the work of JHS or the Client Intake and Liaison program

The Client Intake and Liaison program has offered tax preparation services for the previous 4 years.  Preference will be given to individuals who are eligible to provide these services via the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program with the Canada Revenue Agency.  More info about this program can be found at www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/community-volunteer-income-tax-program.html

 

Administrative duties:

Report as required to ED and Board

Answer phones and direct any walk in traffic

Send and reply to written correspondences directed to the Client Intake and Liaison program

Maintain an active electronic client database, file system and statistics for the program.

 

Working conditions:

The Client Intake and Liaison position is primarily an office position.  This includes periods of sitting, with occasional movement to the basement (Career Closet) or to other locations outside the office location.  The position requires significant use of a computer and other technology.  Clients may present with challenging behaviours and personal circumstances.
