Description of Position / skills Required

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.



Reporting to the Manager of Clinical Operations and Programs, the Wellness Advocate is committed to helping people experiencing homelessness and poverty transition toward and maintain sustainable and healthy lifestyles. The purpose of the Health and Wellness area is to facilitate the case management of community participants at the Seed. The Wellness Advocate connects community participants with any needed external and internal resources. 



  • Meet with new community participants and complete a basic intake so that they can be helped and/or referred to internal and external resources
  • Educate and empower community participants to understand and achieve their rights and responsibilities, as participating members of society
  • Liaise with internal and external resources that will help community participants increase their assets.  This includes maintaining existing partnerships as well as developing new partnerships
  • In regards to community participants who have a Caseworker (either internally or externally), compliment the work the Caseworkers by acting as a consultant and liaison for issues that require community participants access to external resources
  • In regards to community participants who do not have a Caseworker, refer these community participants directly to internal and external resources as needed
  • Advocate for community participants as needed both to access resources within and outside the organization
  • Ensure community participants accessed external resources by completing follow up with community participants and agencies
  • Provide crisis intervention as necessary
  • Provide input into program evaluation upon request
  • Other duties as assigned


Administrative Support

  • Build a comprehensive library and knowledge base on community resources
  • Share and disseminate community resource information
  • Track assigned community participants’ progress with external resources
  • Communicate relevant information to involved caseworkers and staff about interactions with community participants and observed behavior when appropriate
  • Document community participants interactions, community participants referrals and community participants progress on ETO
  • Track statistics and prepare reports, as required
  • Attend meetings and training, as assigned
  • Serve on internal and external committees, as requested
  • Provide input into the development of policies and procedures for designated programs
  • Keep community participants’ records and information confidential, updated, and secure
Certifications / Qualifications / Education


  • Bachelor of Social Work or Bachelor in Psychology or equivalent education is preferred
  • One to Three years of related working experience
  • Strong computer knowledge in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently and within a team
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and a clean driver’s abstracts



  • This is a permanent full-time position working 32 hours per week Monday through Friday between 9 am to 4:30 pm. Working evenings or weekend on occasion.
  • Office setting with travelling required to various external agencies
  • Mental effort: moderate, periods of high volume workload
  • Physical effort: Frequent reaching, walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time
  • Employment Security Check is required
