Description of Position / skills Required

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.


Reporting to the Managing Director—Central Services, the Building Operator is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of the building. The Building Operator will be responsible for the day-to-day building operations and maintenance thereof, ensuring the building is providing a safe environment for the public, staff and guests.


  • Ensuring compliance with any and all applicable government regulations relating to scope of work
  • Complying with organizational policies and procedures at all times and ensuring building standards and efficiencies are maintained
  • Performing and completing all assigned duties & responsibilities with minimum supervision as per agreed schedules
  • Ensuring all equipment and systems are operated in a safe and efficient manner and are in compliance with all applicable government codes & regulations
  • Conducting inspections on all site mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and related equipment including but not limited to water treatment, boilers, heat pumps, roof top units, air conditioners, etc., on daily/weekly basis and completing appropriate record logs in order to ensure equipment is maintained in good working order
  • Conducting regular interior, exterior and roof inspections of properties for damage and performing or arranging repairs
  • Recording all service performed by using Property Asset Management Software
  • Providing assistance to Managing Director—Central Services in the preparation of building operating budget
  • Work closely and oversee Grounds Crew Worker
  • Complete frequent and regular cleaning duties
  • Other duties as assigned


  • 2-5 years’ experience in one or more of the following: HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Fire Alarm, and other related equipment and systems
  • Building Operator — 5th Class Certification an asset
  • Experience in drywall repair, tile setting and other related skills considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Provincial Building Code & Regulations, Canadian Electrical Code, Provincial Fire Code and Electrical Safety Authority
  • A passion to be part of ending homelessness in Alberta
  • Collaborative worker and effective member of a team
  • Good judgment and decision-making skills
  • Detail oriented and good organization skills
  • Adaptable to new ideas and change
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and a clean driver’s abstracts
  • Must adhere to Health and Safety regulations
  • Mentally and physically able to perform duties as outlined
  • Able to lift 22kg (50lbs)


  • This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week from 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday
  • Working environment will include both indoors and outdoors
  • Physical effort: standing for long periods, walking, climbing, bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching
  • Mental effort: moderate, periods of high volume
  • Employment Security Check is required
