Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects

Applications for Fall 2020 will open on October 1, 2019!

Pursue your passion

RDC’s Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects will prepare you for exciting entry level jobs, in mid- to large-sized animation studios, and will equip you with the necessary artistic and technical skills to be successful in the animation and visual effects industry. During this intensive, full-time, four year program, you will use industry-relevant software and be introduced early to the concepts of storyboarding, layout, color and light that will be applied to character animation in 3D software, digital sculpting, digital texture painting, compositing, and visual effects. The fourth year of the program has no formal classes. During this applied year, you will be guided and supported by professional faculty in creating your own demo reels.

Bring your art to life through animation

With a focus in 3D animation and visual effects, we believe in grounding your 3D skills with fundamental studio experiences. You will develop artistic skills in life drawing, figure drawing and life sculpting, while learning the art of storytelling and storyboarding. With an artistic foundation you will learn to construct animations, following a current and typical animation production pipeline, while having the ability to specialize in a chosen area within the animation pipeline (i.e. character animator, modeller, lighter, texture artist).

Each student has 24-hour access to their own workstation in our state-of-the-art animation studio, which includes a 22 HD Cintiq, GTX1080 Ti Video Card and 32 GB of ram.

Learn from professional, hands-on instructors

Our program is taught by professional practicing artists, all of whom have experienced successful careers within the creative industry. We will not only teach you the knowledge and technical skills required to be successful, but you will learn by doing in this hands-on, practical program.

You will learn to work with and gain experience with software used in the industry such as:

Develop a personal profile/demo reel at an industry-accepted level

For many professions, having a great resume and cover letter are the most important factors in landing a job. For animators and visual effects professionals it’s all about the demo reel. Although you will have been developing work throughout your entire program, the fourth year of your applied degree will be spent creating your own demo reel. You have no formal classes during this year, and will be guided and supported by professional faculty to ensure you are on the right track to success.
