RDC Astrophysicist Receives Alberta Science Network Award for Volunteer Work
Dr. Robbie Halonen recently received the Alberta Science Network’s E.R. Ward Neale Memorial Award for his extensive volunteer work with rural Alberta schools. Over the past four years, Dr. Halonen has been touring a mobile, inflatable planetarium from the Telus World of Science to various schools in the Red Deer region, inspiring students to ask scientific questions about the universe. With each visit, he presents one-hour shows for Grade 6 students, showcasing the wonders of the night sky, and encouraging and inspiring students to recognize basic astronomical objects from their own backyards. To date, he has done 102 presentations and has reached approximately 2900 students in the area.
