Alberta Student Loan for Apprentices

What is it?

Alberta Student Aid provides needs-based funding to registered apprentices in Alberta in the form of provincial loans. Apprentices with a documented permanent disability may be eligible for grant dollars.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person
  • Must be an Alberta resident (check residency requirements here)
  • Must be a registered apprentice with Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT)
  • Must be attending a full-time apprenticeship technical training period (part-time programs do not qualify)

How do I apply?

Online applications are accessed by visiting www.studentaid.alberta.ca and logging in using your MADI (My Alberta Digital ID) username and password. Once logged in, under Apply for Post-Secondary Funding you will select the funding application for the academic year you wish to receive funding for. The application will ask for your program and specialization. Your program is "Apprenticeship" and your specialization is your trade (ex. Welding).

When should I apply?

Student loan applications are released every June for the following academic year (August - July). Students can apply as soon as the application is available - you do not need to be registered for technical training in order to apply.  Apply early as applications can take up to 6 weeks to process. The deadline to apply is 30 days prior to your technical training end date.

FAQs

How does repayment work?
As long as you are registered as an apprentice with Apprenticeship and Industry Training, your Alberta Student Loan will remain in interest-free status. This includes both technical training and on-the-job training. If you are no longer registered as an apprentice, a non-progressing apprentice, or you have successfully obtained your journeyman certificate, you will enter your 12 month grace period. During these 12 months, you are not required to make any payments and your loan will remain in interest-free status. After these 12 months, you will begin accruing interest on your student loan and monthly payments will be required.

Can I apply for both Alberta Student Aid Loans & Grants and the Canada Apprentice Loan simultaneously?
