From Figure to Face - Nicholas Pearce

This five-day workshop offers students two challenges: painting the human figure in acrylic using a limited palette and a single brush, and then progressing to doing a portrait of a family member or friend. We start with a talk on the elements of composition, the basis of all good paintings. Then students will choose from a range of figurative photo references that I supply. We’ll use the ancient technique of gridding to transfer the image to the first 30 x 40 inch canvas. Once the drawing is done, I will demonstrate a technique I’ve been developing over the past 20 years: using a palette of four colours plus white, applied with a single 1 1/2 inch house painters brush for everything from blocking in to fine details to tonal washes. Students will learn how to mix their colours on the canvas, how to block the image in, and how to feather wet paint on to dry to create subtle colour shifts. Then we’ll do washes to unify lighting effects in some areas, and to set other areas back. For their second painting, students will use what they’ve learned to do a portrait of someone close to them. Throughout the week I’ll do demonstrations of technique, one-on-one help and painting along with the students so they can see the techniques in action. I strive to have everyone complete both paintings by the end of the week, ready to hang on their walls. A word to the wise: This class is about skills, not creativity. I believe creativity cannot be taught, and that it happens when you realize what you can do with your skills. So I teach skills, in a fun and collegial atmosphere. Students can then take those skills home, and use them to fuel their creative artistic journey.
