As the world continues to wrestle with the COVID-19 pandemic, Red Deer College is not immune to its effects. In response to the COVID-19 situation, RDC has made the difficult decision to temporarily lay-off a portion of its valued workforce.

Between now and April 21, 2020, 47 permanent employees will be temporarily laid-off, until further notice. Additionally, since the start of the pandemic, 145 casual, part-time, or term-certain employees have been issued Records of Employment (ROE) due to shortage of work as a result of this pandemic so that they can access available benefits.

Temporary lay-offs for permanent employees will come with the intent to recall individuals back to work at a future date. RDC currently employs about 1,400 individuals in full-time, part-time, term-certain and casual positions.

“I appreciate the passion and hard work that all of our employees bring to their careers at RDC, serving our students and community members every day. Having to temporarily lay-off some of our colleagues as we navigate this unprecedented situation is especially hard, and this type of information is never easy to share,” says Dr. Peter Nunoda, RDC President. “However, it is our responsibility to ensure the business of the College continues, even in times of challenge and uncertainty.”

RDC is committed to ensuring online program and service delivery for its students is maintained during the COVID-19 situation, while at the same time witnessing reduced revenue. This led to difficult decisions being made about temporary employee lay-offs.

The individuals who are temporarily laid-off will receive Records of Employment from RDC, allowing them to apply for Employment Insurance and other government financial assistance they may qualify for that has been announced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

RDC continues to plan its budget for the 2020/2021 academic year, and those decisions will be shared as they are finalized.
