Brittany Lausen

Brittany Lausen is a strong, dedicated and compassionate student leader at Red Deer College. Since starting her RDC journey in the fall of 2014, Brittany’s significant contributions have benefited RDC and its students. She is a tireless volunteer, leader and mentor who is devoted to improving the College community.

This past year, Brittany filled two roles on the Students’ Association Executive – one as President, which she was elected into, and the other as Vice President Academic, which she filled since October. In this dual capacity, she was part of many student initiatives. One highlight includes the official opening of The Loft, a newly renovated space on main campus where students can study and socialize, also providing a hub for student groups and housing the new Students’ Association Council Chambers.

When she reflects on the last year, one initiative Brittany is most proud of is how the Students’ Association made it a priority to address the easily over-looked topic of student hunger. They created strong awareness that the Student Foodbank exists, and they worked to help reduce food insecurity on campus by providing free breakfasts one day each week at both main and downtown campus. They also launched the Soup Initiative program, where students can “pay-what-you-can” for a bowl of soup at the Farside Bar & Grill, even if that was nothing.

A dedicated volunteer in the community, Brittany has been a volunteer tutor with Learning Disabilities – Red Deer Chapter for more than four years, where she tutors students in Reading and Math each week. She also loved volunteering with the 2019 Canada Winter Games, which led to her volunteerism with the Airdrie Winter Games this past February.

Brittany has been re-elected as President of the Students’ Association for the 2020/2021 year. Looking to the future, she will pursue further education once she is done her Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, and then she has her sight set on working in the post-secondary sector. She is energized by the constantly changing climate and the engaging challenges post-secondary institutions provide, and she wants a future career where every day offers a new adventure.

Red Deer College is proud to announce Brittany Lausen as the recipient of the Red Deer College Foundation Outstanding Student Award for Convocation 2020.
