Social media and public relations thought leader offers insights to class via video link


This year’s inaugural Media Studies and Professional Communication class were treated to some expert advice from public relations thought leader and social media expert Bob Pickard.

“I love speaking with students,” said Pickard. “They had great questions.”

Pickard, CEO of Signal Leadership Communication in Toronto and a 25-year public relations industry veteran, talked to Neil Levine’s MSPC 120 Social Media and Digital Communication class via a videoconference from Toronto.

Pickard discussed recent trends in social media and his thoughts on how business and organizational communication has evolved given the recent popularity of social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Pickard also noted how Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau’s usage of social media has been true to their unique styles and enabled their leadership of the US and Canada, for better and for worse.

“From our perspective as students, bringing knowledgeable and talented guest speakers into the classroom provides us with innovative and real-life learning experiences,” said Joanna Pohl, a first-year MSPC student.

Students in the new MSPC program take courses in a variety of communication-related subjects and disciplines. Instructors in the program blend both theory and practice into the two-year program.

“The use of technology like videoconferencing enables us to bring industry leaders into the classroom, and that’s a win for our students,” said Levine, an MSPC instructor.
