A Story of Legacy and Aspiration: Our New Name
One year after learning that it would become a university, Red Deer College reached another major milestone on March 5, 2019. The Government of Alberta accepted the recommendation from RDC's Board of Governors and announced that Red Deer University would be the institution's name of the future.
We are so proud of the support of our community in helping us gain approval to transition to a university. Our name is one key milestone, and once we have completed the remaining transition requirements, we will officially become Red Deer University. As we stated in 2018, it is expected that the transition journey will be three to five years.

RDC's Historic Moment
On March 1, 2018, Premier Rachel Notley and Minister of Advanced Education, Marlin Schmidt, announced that Red Deer College has been given approval to offer our own degrees and begin the journey to become a university.
This milestone announcement represents the culmination of work done by RDC’s board, faculty, staff, students, stakeholders and community members over more than 25 years.
The College has begun the monumental behind-the-scenes work on this journey to our new reality. We anticipate it will take about three to five years to complete the necessary work to become a recognized university.
Everything we do now, plus grant our own degrees
We will continue to offer the same breadth of programming and credentials we do now, plus grant our own degrees. This means RDC will continue to offer trades, certificates, diplomas, graduate certificates and applied degrees, as well as collaborative degrees with our partners, in a variety of program areas. As a university, we will provide more opportunities with our breadth of programs for students to complete their studies in central Alberta and stay in our region after graduation.
Our institution will continue to measure our success by who we let in, not who we keep out. We will fail if our students are not challenged by programs that stretch them, empower them, and prepare them for the ever-changing nature of work. Applied learning, and applied research that connects students with leaders in business, industry and the not-for-profit sectors, solving real world problems, will be the centrepiece of what we continue to do.
The opportunity for RDC to grant our own degrees acknowledges the growth, and evolution, of RDC as a mature academic institution. What our future as a university looks like is still unknown. It won’t happen overnight. But the potential is limitless.
