Sport Camps at Red Deer College

Throughout July and August, Red Deer College will be providing free Outdoor Physical Literacy Camps for six to12 year-old children whose families have been impacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Made possible through a grant from the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and Community Foundations of Canada, the funding will allow 130 youth to attend camps this summer.

“We are so pleased to receive this grant, which will allow us to provide opportunities for youth who may not otherwise have been able to attend camps this year,” says Trent Rix, RDC’s Director of Ancillary and Sport Services. “The pandemic crisis means that children and their families may be struggling with financial and social issues. Through the re-envisioned sport camps RDC is offering this year, we will educate and encourage children on how to have fun through movement, all in a safe and healthy way. This is very positive for youth and their families.”

The Outdoor Physical Literacy Camp is for those aged 6 to 12, and it focuses on fundamental movement skills such as hopping, skipping, throwing and jumping, which will be taught through a wide variety of fun activities. The majority of activities are planned for outdoors, but RDC has also prepared to safely deliver programming indoors in case of poor weather. COVID-19 protocols and precautions will be employed across the camps, and group sizes will be kept small. The campers will engage in activities including orienteering, scavenger hunts, games, arts and crafts, and more.

“Our camp participants will have the opportunity to improve their physical health through movement, and this is also important for mental health and cognitive development,” says Rix. “With all of the pressures of COVID-19, we are able to offer youth a fun, empowering and active camp experience during a time when they need it most.”

Parents or guardians who are interested in applying for their children to attend the Outdoor Physical Literacy Camp can apply online. The simple form collects basic information about the child and parent/guardian, along with the preferred dates to attend a camp. If approved, applicants will receive instructions on how to register. Spaces in the camps will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
