2019 Canada Winter Games

In February and March of 2019, Red Deer and central Alberta will welcome the nation for the 2019 Canada Winter Games (Jeux d'hiver du Canada 2019).  As RDC will be home to the Athletes’ Village, it is important to note that it won’t be business as usual for students living in RDC Residence in the 2018-19 academic year. RDC recognizes the effect and opportunities the Games will have for our students. For that reason, we are providing early notice and assistance in planning for next year. RDC is committed to helping students living in our housing find the best option that suits them.

Here is what you need to know:
  • RDC has partnered with Olds College, and from February 8 – March 6, 2019, those students living in our Residence who will need accommodations will be housed in the residence at Olds College.
  • If students in the RDC Residence decide to stay with family or friends during that period then they will not pay rent to RDC between February 8 and March 6, 2019.
  • The RDC Residence staff will be in Olds offering programming and making it a comfortable, and smooth transition for all students.

RDC and Olds College

Students living in the Olds College Residence during this time will have:

  • Their own comfortable single bedroom with attached bathroom
  • A generous Olds College meal plan (at no additional cost) which offers a:
    • wide selection of delicious breakfast items
    • healthy salad bar option
    • sandwich bar
    • choice of homemade soups, burgers and pizza
    • daily variety of hot entrees
    • collection of tasty desserts
    • my pantry option – if you have a craving, just head to the pantry and prepare your own meal to fit your own wants and needs
  • Free transportation to and from RDC
  • Parking at no additional cost
  • 24 hour security

We will be creating the same Residence experience at Olds College that students would receive at RDC. Resident Attendants and staff will be onsite to help our students daily. Many fun events will be planned at Olds College and surrounding area. Experience free events such as bowling nights, pizza, movies and much more!

Additional Details

Lockable storage within each RDC unit, and/or other nearby on-campus storage options, will be provided for each tenant during that period.

We will continue to work with our students and partners, including the Students’ Association and the Canada Winter Games Host Society, to help ensure our students continue to have a positive experience living in Residence.

As you move through the residence application process, our team will work closely with all students to answer questions and address individual needs.

We encourage you to review the FAQ section as well as come back to this page often as we will be adding up to date details on the RDC Residence Accommodation Strategy.  If you have further questions, please contact Residence by rdc [dot] residence [at] rdc [dot] ab [dot] ca (email), or call 403.342.3257, and we will be happy to discuss any questions or concerns.
