Markmaking in Abstract Expressionistic Acrylic Paintings

Jacqueline Sullivan
Since toddlerhood, we have been expressing ourselves with marks. Markmaking is about communicating ideas and emotions with a mark such as a line, circle, dash or dot. In an era dominated by technology, mark making has become more valued in abstract art. The practice of making organic, energetic marks is an integral part of creating abstract acrylic paintings. Begin with sumi marks on oriental papers, working gradually into full colour acrylic abstracts and exploring Asemic writing. The abstract writing will be added to paintings as a textural element.
