Backpacks to Briefcases

Annual professional development conference a highlight for RDC students

Backpacks to Briefcases, RDC’s annual professional development conference for students, took place on September 28, and students learned a wide variety of career-relevant information from industry experts.

Backpacks to Briefcases provides students with valuable, real-world information that helps them transition from the classroom to the workplace. The event offers students learning opportunities in a conference setting, and it is structured to mirror the types of conferences they may attend in their future careers. Students gain valuable experience into the conference environment itself, while also learning from a wide variety of professional speakers covering a range of topics that provide a wealth of professional information.

This year’s Backpacks to Briefcases included presentations from RDC alumni, as well as local and provincial professionals who shared their expertise about a wide variety of topics. The 2017 keynote address was from local business leaders and philanthropists, Jack and Joan Donald. The duo, whose name is at the heart of RDC’s Donald School of Business, shared with students their secrets to success, as well as the importance of giving back to the community.
Additional sessions were presented by individuals, panels of professionals and RDC students, and included topics ranging from entrepreneurship to volunteerism, getting hired to student success stories.

The annual conference was open to all RDC students, and over 570 students participated this year. Through Backpacks to Briefcases, students have the opportunity to select the sessions that resonate with their career and personal goals, and the information they receive enhances their professional knowledge base for their future careers.

Complete details on Backpacks to Briefcases, including presenters and session information from the 2017 event, is available on RDC’s website.
