When Opportunity Knocks
Adam Sia learned about Red Deer College from a friend. And, after doing some research into the programs RDC offered, he realized it might be just what he was looking for.
The British Columbia native enrolled in the Education program, bought a house – sight-unseen – near the College and moved to Red Deer to begin a new chapter in his life. “When I looked at what Red Deer College and Red Deer had to offer, I realized it ticked all the boxes I was looking for,” he explains. “Red Deer was perfectly located and it had a small town feeling with big city opportunities, plus RDC had an excellent Education program.”
While Adam appreciated the opportunities the city and the College offered him, he also made the most of these, dedicating himself to working hard in all areas of his life. During his time at RDC, Adam worked in the Equipment Room, for the Intramurals program and also as an Athletic Trainer for the Kings Hockey team – all in addition to the jobs he took on outside of the College.
His main goal of becoming a teacher remained his central focus, though, and he transferred into the Bachelor of Education Middle Years program to complete this collaborative degree at RDC. He also worked with youth through the Hoops Basketball Program and Science Camps offered through Continuing Education the College. “I started to put together me having an entire life here,” he says, “not just a career, but an entire life here in Red Deer.”
Adam’s career and his life took the next step when he got offered his first teaching job in Sylvan Lake, and he has continued to root his life in central Alberta since then. Now, 12 years later, he and his wife have a daughter and twin girls all under the age of three, and he has also received his Masters Degree and taken on the role of Vice Principal at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School in Innisfail.
With all of the work he has put in to get where he is, Adam still places great value on the opportunities that originated from his College days. “I made great friendships and connections here,” he says. “Everything in my outside career ties back to RDC.”
