Shaping Our Future

The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre/Centre des Jeux du Canada Gary W. Harris is Red Deer College's newest facility, and it will serve our learners, partners and community members for decades to come. The new Centre will provide our College and our region with a comprehensive venue for teaching and learning, as well as athletic, recreational and community activities, all vital components for the health and well-being of central Albertans. 
 
The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre will shape the future of our College, creating new spaces to increase and enhance programming, while also providing students with applied opportunities through in-class learning and practicum experiences. The facility will also provide a remarkable array of resources and programs to all residents, with community access that is inclusive and multi-generational, promoting healthy lifestyle development for all ages.

The Vision

The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre will be a world-class, inclusive facility that integrates education and learning with sport and training in order to provide:
  • A welcoming and dynamic learning environment
  • Enhanced programming that promotes healthy lifestyles and community connections
  • High performance and recreational athletic training and playing venues
  • Community gathering spaces for central Albertans of all ages

Teaching & Learning

The Donald Health & Wellness Centre, a wing in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, will be dedicated to teaching and learning. Additional areas in the Centre will support programming by: 

  • Creating critical components required to further RDC’s vision of becoming a Polytechnic University
  • Supporting students and programs primarily in RDC’s School of Health Sciences (including health, wellness and health promotion related programming)
  • Providing new spaces, such as the Performance Gymnasium, Fitness & Training Spaces and Arena, which will serve a critical role as classroom and lab learning spaces for students
  • Allowing for growth in enrolment in kinesiology and health and wellness programs, as well as the development of enhanced practicum learning opportunities
  • Creating new academic programming opportunities 
  • Facilitating research initiatives specific to health, wellness and sport

Health & Wellness

The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre will offer community access that is inclusive and multi-generational, promoting healthy lifestyle development at all stages of life. This community access will include:

  • Accessing venues that meet provincial, national and international sporting standards, providing improved training spaces to support local sports and creating new opportunities to host events and tournaments
  • Facilitating development programs for players, coaches and trainers
  • Allowing for greater community access to programming that promotes health and wellness, while also preventing injury
