Kings & Queens Scholarship Breakfast
Each year, RDC Athletics hosts the Kings & Queens Scholarship Breakfast, presented by Scott Builders. The event recognizes student-athletes whose accomplishments distinguish them as leaders in the classroom, in the community and in their sport. We also bring in a well-known keynote speaker to share their success stories with our athletes and supporters.
This year, Karl Subban, author, educator, motivator and father to NHL’ers PK and Malcolm Subban, will join us to share the Subban Plan for Success.

About Keynote Speaker Karl Subban
Wisdom. Humour. Leadership experience. Memorable stories. These are the hallmarks of a Karl Subban keynote. In his thirty-plus years of coaching, teaching, and parenting, Karl Subban has proven to be a leader with the gift of inspiring others. He has dedicated his life to helping people grow their potential--to be better at what they do, and to be better people. Drawing on his experience, Subban talks about vision, perseverance, teamwork, and what it means to lead. He uses pointed anecdotes and powerful metaphors to tell a larger narrative about defining and achieving success.
Mixing personal stories with lessons he learned as a coach and principal--lessons about goal-setting, perseverance, and accomplishment, Subban shares a proven framework for how to apply the same principles in all aspects of life to help you identify, develop and live your dreams and unlock your potential. Since his early days, he has held the firmly-rooted belief that anyone can—and everyone should—reach their true potential.
His keynote resonates with everyone from educators to business and community leaders.
About the Kings & Queens Scholarship Breakfast
Funds raised, in partnership with RDC’s sponsors and community contributors, directly support student scholarships - such as the Scott Builders Student-Athlete Leadership Scholarships - which are presented at the Scholarship Breakfast.
“The scholarship breakfast means a lot to the student-athletes. It’s awesome to be in the same room with people who show their support and commitment to RDC and the student-athletes."
- Spencer Klassen, RDC Kings Basketball guard, and Bachelor of Education, Elementary student
Since its inception, the Kings & Queens Scholarship Breakfast has raised more than $300,000 for student- athlete awards, helping student-athletes to pursue both their education and their passion for playing collegiate sports.
"The contributions we receive from the scholarship breakfast are such an important part of our success as student-athletes and as a school. The financial stress of being a student is difficult. Our commitment to practices and games makes it challenging for us to be fully available for employment during the school year.”
- Mike Salmon, RDC Kings Hockey goaltender, and Bachelor of Business Administration student
Red Deer College has an impressive athletics tradition featuring 21 National Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) titles, more than 145 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) team titles and 30 ACAC individual titles. RDC student-athletes and coaches have received countless individual honours both for academic and sporting.
"I feel extremely fortunate to have received scholarships as they have lowered the financial stress and allowed me to put everything into my training while still maintaining good grades." The Kinds and Queens Scholarship Breakfast is a way for us to engage with our community and show our appreciation for their generous donations and support."
-Jordanna Cota, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross-Country All-Canadian and Bachelor of Science in Nursing student.
