Keeping Success in the Region

When Jordan Bauman graduated as the valedictorian from high school in Stettler, his interest in business was clear.

“My parents own their own business so I had been exposed to it for my entire life. It always interested me.”

Now in his second year of the Bachelor of Business Administration in RDC’s Donald School of Business, the close proximity to quality business training in central Alberta has provided Jordan the opportunity to pursue his highest aspirations without leaving the region.

“Red Deer’s nice and close to home so it was an easy decision to come here,” he says. “I enjoy the environment downtown. You’re going to school in a business environment so you know what it’s going to be like after when you’ve graduated.”

Last year, Jordan’s excellence in the classroom earned him $6,000 in awards and scholarships and he was recognized as one of the top award winners at RDC in 2014.

“I’m really thankful for the support I’ve received. The scholarships have provided the motivation and determination to continue excelling in class. They’ve also allowed me to focus on just school, otherwise I’d have to be working a part-time job as well. So this really allows me to focus entirely on my grades and that’s always been really important to me.”

With hands-on projects and presentations that emphasize real-world business challenges and opportunities, Jordan has been pleased with his decision to remain in central Alberta for his education.

“The small class sizes really help. The instructors are always willing to help, and there are a lot of opportunities to do presentations and other real-world projects.”

An ambitious student, Jordan has been taking in every opportunity that comes his way, including Backpacks to Briefcases, a popular annual event that provides students with valuable insights from business leaders, many of whom are RDC alumni.

“There’s some really awesome speakers and it’s great to hear from what they’ve accomplished in the business world. It gives you some different ideas of what you can be doing.”

Jordan will have the opportunity to complete his entire four-year Bachelor of Business Administration in Red Deer, and he plans to pursue a CPA designation. He has also already lined up a summer job with MNP.

With the support of donors who are enriching the learning experiences and enhancing the opportunities available, the College has maintained and expanded on the exciting possibilities that are keeping the talent in central Alberta.
